Late Winter 2002

Winter nearly over and much is happening behind the scenes.
The late season snows have put a big smile on the face of many
mushroomers. The fire data are in, and we have a good mosaic of burns to
look at this spring. Our spring foray will be at a great location with a fully
appointed kitchen, dormitories, and DIRECT access to theforest burned last
summer.
We are also planning a foray this fall at Lost Trail Hot Springs the
weekend of October 4,5,6. This year the Clark Fork Chapter of the Native
Plant Society (and maybe the FH chapter) will join us in this fine outdoor
setting. Frank Dugan will be coming over from Pullman, WA to tell us about
fungi, NOT mushrooms!
This was a tough year for truffles, and the second year in the last 9
that we did not host a truffle dinner. I did have a little truffle butter left from
spring ’01 for Valentines Day at the Black Dog Café, but it has been a lean
time for truffle lovers.
Lots of dried morels just now, still the cheapest prices for pounds of
dried ($50) that I have seen in the last 7 years or so. Field dried material may
be a bit buggy.

Fall foray 2001:
The fall foray was held in late October at the Lost Trail Hot Springs Resort (and again
this year!!) south of Darby Montana. The event brought together over 25 people for the
weekend. A highlight of the event was the mushroom tasting, see details below. The
array of mushrooms found during the foray was low due to sparse rain in the early fall.
We are hoping for a better fall fruiting this year and we will be providing details of this
great event as the summer progresses.
We are working on getting the species list from this foray onto the web site.
oSeven mushrooms for tasting.
