8a Gills are free (do not touch the stem) and generally white or mostly so. Spore print is white, cream, or ivory. Cap often ornamented with warts or squamules, an ANNULUS or fleshy ring around the stem. Often has a bulbous base, some species have a sheath or VOLVA surrounding the bulb.
8b. Gills are white
but other features do not match. Mushrooms may be growing in clusters, in
dark circles in the grass, or lacking a bulb or an annulus on the stem.

8C. Gills are free
and color may range from pink to brown to black. Spore print will be brown,
salmon-pinkish, black, or some dark color. These mushrooms often have a thick
stem, an annulus on the stem, and the base of the stem may stain yellow when
cut.

brownish but other features do not match. Stem is thin, or if thick, the mushroom
may have a spiderweb-like veil under the cap.
