Lyophyllum decartes

The yellowish tan cap collections of this group are a good edible. I often find clumps growing on woodchip piles that are several feet in diameter and weigh upwards of ten pounds. There seem to be several varieties or species of this fungus, some with dark gray caps, which have caused digestive upset.

Note the absence of an annulus, cespitose fruiting pattern, and attached to slightly decurrent gills. Siderophilous granules visible in basidia when treated with acetocarmine and viewed under the microscope.

They are a mild and delicious mushroom, and many people eat it in Montana, where it is known as Fried Chicken mushroom. These mushrooms are similar to what the Japanese call "shimeji" and can be used in the same way.

This fungus has been found on the Kootenai National Forest.
