Geopora cooperi

G. cooperi is our largest and tastiest truffle-like ascomycete. Note the fuzzy brown exterior and loosely convoluted fertile interior. You have to get up pretty early in the morning to beat the squirrels to these bad boys. I've found them in the mountains of Utah, in Oregon, and a couple places in western Montana, including fairly high elevations. They are often buried in the duff, but sometimes erupt even through suburban lawns, as this one did.
