ACindex/Cortinarius caninus

This large and impressive Cort has a dry cap and firm flesh; at a distance you might think you've found a King Bolete. Note the cinnamon brown spore print.

It is found under mixed conifers. I've collected it in western Montana and in Oregon, where it had been eaten by a deer. I tried it once and was not terribly impressed. There are several similar Cortinarius, and this group is eaten in Europe. As it is difficult to distinguish from possibly toxic species, I do not consider it a good species for the table.

Cortinarius caninus and C. infractus both can get huge like that.
