This small to medium sized mushroom grows in groups in the moss in older mixed stands of Doug fir and true firs. It tastes sweet when raw, and keeps this flavor when cooked. There are other members of this genus in western Montana as well, but they are not very tasty. The orange colored C. lovejoyae has been found in the Selway-Bitterroot, and C. ligula, yellow and tongue-shaped, often fruits profusely in moss. This fungus has been found on the Kootenai National Forest.
