This is a picture of the mycelial mat that is left behind as the snowbanks retreat in the spring. The fungi here are fast at work, decomposing the leaves and litter on the forest floor while the limited moisture lasts. Melting snowbanks are one of the more predictable mushroom habitats in the arid mountains. Dozens of species are found here.
