Marasmius oreades

Marasmius naranja

A Marasmius species.

This purple Marasmius has the cigar-shaped spores and is from Madidi, but I do not know the species.

Known as the horsehair fungus for its dark and pliable stipe, Marasmius androsaceous belongs to a very large genus of fungi. Hundreds of species of Marasmius inhabit the tropics, and yet we have just a half dozen species in the Rockies that I know of. Orson Miller says these are edible, and even offers a recipe for Marasmius cookies, but these are some tiny mushrooms and you would need scissors and patience to gather a cupful.

Marasmius oreades
This delicious, almond flavored mushroom grows in dark green rings in lawns and grassy spots. Once you know how to identify it by using the shake test, and recognize the poisonous mushrooms that grow in lawns, this is a good edible. Be careful where you pick them, they can accumulate pesticides and become toxic.
