Leucopax
Leucopaxillus albissimus, the white Leucopax, is a rather anonymous mushroom until you check the base of the stipe, where it is fused to a mass of cottony mycelia that penetrates the duff. And when you taste a bite, you will probably not be interested in eating it, as it is a bittt bitttter.. The fleshy fruiting bodies are remarkably persistent. I kept one sitting on the lawn for the whole fall and winter season. In spring I threw it in the compost and I think it may still be there....

Leucopaxillus amarus, the bitter Leucopax, also has the fuzzy cottony mycelia at the base of the stem, but the cap is usually dry and brown. It is notably, seriously, remarkably bitttter. gaak. Try it you'll see what I mean.

Leucopaxillus septentrionalis
