Cystoderma fallax
This cute little mushroom has enough poison to kill a full grown person. Note the annulus on the stipe. the shiny thing is a dime.

Collybia maculata aka Rhodocollybia maculata
So named for its tendency to slowly bruise a bloody burgundy color when handled. This remarkable mushroom shows up early in the spring in lodgepole pine stands, at melting snowbanks, and in beds of woodchips or duff all summer right into late autumn. It is reputedly non toxic, and the material I sampled was unpleasantly bland with a vague bitterness. This mushroom may be found as very small or rather large medium sized mushrooms, and may manifest many appearances due to its changeable coloration. It does not smell strongly, so many sightings are necessary to become familiar with this common species.

Collybia butyracea aka Rhodocollybia butyracea
The buttery collybia is named for its greasy capped appearance and not, unfortunately, for its flavor. Mushrooms in this group may or may not produce an aroma. It is not as common in our area as the other Collybias, but favors the nice duffy places in stands with Grand Fir. It is another white spored wood decomposer that favors well decomposed wood.

Collybia tuberosa, showing the sclerotia.
