Colorado 1998-2007

Every year for the past seven, I have traveled to Colorado to be present at the wonderful mushroom festivals there, and besides Montana can be a bit dry and smoky in August.

Working with the excellent support of the Colorado Mycological Society, the Crested Butte foray has turned up large numbers of interesting and unusual species, from false truffles and matsutake to unique cup fungi and giant puffballs. The local restaurants also celebrate the wild mushrooms with special meals and menus. Click here to see pictures from the event.

Mushroom taste tests from the Crested Butte Wild Mushroom Festival are posted under Taste Tests.

The Telluride Mushroom Festival celebrates not only the culinary and medicinal but also the psychological and spiritual aspects of fungi. After the mushroom hunt, there is a parade and mushroom feast.

We have posted several collections from Colorado forays on our website, such as Lyophyllum and Cortinarius.

Albatrellus confluens and Laccaria laccata, two common finds from the Crested Butte foray, held each year in late August.

This shows the two varieties of Boletus commonly found and eaten in Colorado.
